Yes, if you think your alternator is going bad, you may want to check the voltage when the car is on. You can do that with a multimeter though, and you'll know within a second whether or not you have a problem. It's not a measurement you need to take continuously. Hell, even if you though you were getting voltage sags when the stereo equip was on, all you'd have to do is crank it and sample the voltage with a multimeter. A water temp gauge would be more useful, that's just my opinion.
